Etymology: < hip n.¹ + wort n.¹; so called on account of the resemblance of the hollow round leaf to the socket of the hip joint (compare cotyledon n. 2 and acetabulum n. 3). Compare post-classical Latin herba coxendicum (1554 in Dodoens; compare coxendix n.). N.E.D. (1898) gives the pronunciation as (hi·pwɒɹt) /ˈhɪpwɜːt/.

Obsolete.

The plant navelwort (or wall pennywort), Umbilicus rupestris (formerly Cotyledon umbilicus), having round, peltate leaves thought to resemble the acetabulum of the hip joint, and used medicinally in the treatment of diseases of the hip. Occasionally also (with distinguishing word): any of various other plants included (or formerly included) in the genus Cotyledon.
