Link Enumeratio plantarum horti regii botanici Berolinensis altera (1821) 5) < Hippuris , name of a genus of plants (1792; specific use of classical Latin hippūris mare's tail (Pliny); < Hellenistic Greek ἵππουρις water plant, horsetail, use as noun of ancient Greek ἵππουρις (feminine adjective) horse-tailed < ἵππος horse (see hippo- comb. form) + οὐρά tail: see uro- comb. form²) + -ideae (see -id suffix²). N.E.D. (1898) gives the pronunciation as (hipiū^ə·rid) /hɪˈpjʊərɪd/.

Any plant of the (former) natural order Hippurideae.This order, also called Halorageae, comprised mare's tail, Hippuris vulgaris (now of the monospecific family Hippuridaceae or the family Plantaginaceae), and the plants, mainly aquatic herbs, now included in the family Haloragaceae.

1897 Bot. Gaz. 24 171 Early predominance of symphysis gave rise to the peculiar group of the myrtles (Myrtales) from the rosewort type, in which by later aphanisis, hippurids (Halorageæ)..were produced.
