Any plant of the (former) natural order Hippurideae.This order, also called Halorageae, comprised mare's tail, Hippuris vulgaris (now of the monospecific family Hippuridaceae or the family Plantaginaceae), and the plants, mainly aquatic herbs, now included in the family Haloragaceae. The most common of these is the Spiked Water Milfoil. 1897 Bot. Gaz. 24 171 Early predominance of symphysis gave rise to the peculiar group of the myrtles (Myrtales) from the rosewort type, in which by later aphanisis, hippurids (Halorageæ)..were produced.
