单词 | hipposandal |
释义 | hipposandaln. Now chiefly Roman History and Archaeology. A removable shoe or boot for a horse which is strapped, rather than nailed, to the hoof, esp. a shaped iron plate fitted over the bottom of a horse's hoof and held in place by leather straps. The exact purpose of iron hipposandals in the ancient world is unclear; although sometimes regarded as a direct equivalent or forerunner of the nailed horseshoe, they seem more likely to have been used infrequently, in order to protect a horse's hooves either in particularly adverse conditions, or in cases of disease; the possibility that they were used as hobbles, in order to restrict a horse's movement, has also been suggested.
