单词 hipposandal
释义

hipposandaln.

Brit. /ˈhɪpəʊˌsandl/, U.S. /ˈhɪpoʊˌsænd(ə)l/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: hippo- comb. form, sandal n.1
Etymology: < hippo- comb. form + sandal n.1, after French hippo-sandale (1835 or earlier).Compare German Hipposandalon, plural Hipposandalen (1840 or earlier). Compare the following earlier use of the French word in an English context:1836 London Jrnl. Arts & Sci. 8 118 Francois Berjou, of Paris, on his horseshoe called by him hippo sandale.
Now chiefly Roman History and Archaeology.
A removable shoe or boot for a horse which is strapped, rather than nailed, to the hoof, esp. a shaped iron plate fitted over the bottom of a horse's hoof and held in place by leather straps. The exact purpose of iron hipposandals in the ancient world is unclear; although sometimes regarded as a direct equivalent or forerunner of the nailed horseshoe, they seem more likely to have been used infrequently, in order to protect a horse's hooves either in particularly adverse conditions, or in cases of disease; the possibility that they were used as hobbles, in order to restrict a horse's movement, has also been suggested.
