Etymology: < classical Latin Hellespontus and its etymon ancient Greek Ἑλλήσποντος Strait of the Dardanelles < Ἕλλη , the name of Helle, daughter of Athamas + πόντος sea (see Pontic adj.¹), so called because Helle was said to have been drowned in it. This was the ancient explanation of the name, which is still accepted by modern scholars.Hellespont occurs as a place name in English contexts from Old English onwards (in Old English as Ellaspontus, in Middle English as Ellespontus, Hellespontus, Helespontum, Elesponte, Ellespount, Hellespont).
