Etymology: < German Heller, †Häller (Middle High German heller , haller , short for haller phenninc < Hall , the name of a town in south-west Germany (now Schwäbisch Hall ) where it was first coined in the late 12th cent. + -er -er suffix1 + phenninc penny n.). Compare post-classical Latin Hallensis (1346; short for denarius Hallensis).Within German sometimes associated with hell bright, shining (see hell v.3) by folk etymology. In α. forms perhaps by association with words in -ard suffix; compare crocherd , variant of kreutzer n., in the same source.
A small coin and former monetary unit of Germany, worth half a pfennig; (also) a coin to the value of one-hundredth of a Korona issued in Austria between 1892 and 1916 (now historical). In later use: a coin worth one-hundredth of a Koruna in the Czech Republic and Slovakia (and previously in Czechoslovakia); = haler n.2Slovakia adopted the euro in January 2009.
