Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek Ἑλλαδ- , Ἑλλάς , -ian suffix.

Etymology: < ancient Greek Ἑλλαδ-, Ἑλλάς Greece ( > classical Latin Hellad- , Hellas ; in form a feminine adjective (short for Ἑλλάς γῆ the Helladic land) < the base of Ἕλλην Hellene n. + -άς -ad suffix¹) + -ian suffix.Ancient Greek Ἑλλάς shows the same development in sense as Ἕλλην (see Hellene n.), denoting first a region in the south of Thessaly, then Greece proper as opposed to the Peloponnese, and then Greece as a whole, including the colonies in Asia Minor.
