Etymology: < Albanian arbëresh, variant (with rhotacism) of arbënesh (1618; now regional) < †Arbën Albania (see Albanian n.2 and adj.3) + -esh , suffix denoting an inhabitant of a place (cognate with or borrowed < classical Latin -ēnsis -ese suffix). Compare Italian arberesco (plural arbereschi).In plural form Arbëreshi probably after the Italian plural form.

A member of an Albanian-speaking people inhabiting parts of southern Italy and Sicily, descended from emigrants from Albania in the Middle Ages. Also: the (Tosk) Albanian dialect of this people.
