Etymology: < the genitive of hen n.1 + milk n.1 In sense 1 after classical Latin lac gallinaceum, itself after ancient Greek γάλα ὀρνιθων ‘birds' milk’. In sense 2 after French lait de poule (1751; 1759 in the passage translated in quot. 1790 at sense 2).
1. As a type of something which is extremely rare, unattainable, or non-existent. Cf. hen's teeth n., pigeon's milk n. 1. Obsolete.
