单词 appliqué
释义

appliquén.adj.

Brit. /əˈpliːkeɪ/, U.S. /ˈæpləˌkeɪ/, /ˌæpləˈkeɪ/
Forms: 1700s– applique, 1700s– appliqué.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French appliqué, appliquer.
Etymology: < French appliqué, past participle of appliquer (see apply v.), although this specific use is apparently not recorded in dictionaries of French. Compare French applique applied ornament, decoration applied to a surface (14th cent. in Middle French as oplique with reference to enamelwork: see plique à jour n.), and also dentelle d'application (1849 as dentelle application), broderie d'application (1877 in Littré; both apparently after English). The early form applique may reflect French applique rather than appliqué, although applique does not normally refer to needlework in French. N.E.D. (1885) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (aplike) /aplike/.
A. n.
Ornamental needlework in which small decorative pieces of fabric are sewn or stuck on to a fabric or garment to form a pattern or trim; the practice of this as a technique or activity; (also) (a piece of) decoration or trim made in this way. Also in extended use in metalwork, and figurative.
