Etymology: < Old French hauberc, earlier holberc, later (and modern French) haubert = Provençal ausberc , Italian osbergo , usbergo , medieval Latin halsberga , etc., a Common Romance derivative of Old High German halsberg , halsperc (masculine) (also halsberga feminine) = Old English healsbeorg , Old Norse halsbjǫrg (feminine), < hals neck + -bergan to cover, protect (compare harbour n.¹).
