Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi hāthī.

Etymology: < Hindi hāthī and perhaps (in quot. 1838) its cognate Bengali hāti < Sanskrit hastin elephant, lit. ‘having a trunk’ < hasta hand, elephant's trunk (perhaps < the same Indo-European base (with different suffix) as ancient Greek χείρ hand: see cheiro- comb. form) + -in, suffix forming adjectives.Compare the following earlier uses of Indian-language words in English contexts (although it is not entirely clear precisely which languages are intended; with quot. 1831 perhaps compare Marathi hattī):1821 D.
