Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi hāthī.
Etymology: < Hindi hāthī and perhaps (in quot. 1838) its cognate Bengali hāti < Sanskrit hastin elephant, lit. ‘having a trunk’ < hasta hand, elephant's trunk (perhaps < the same Indo-European base (with different suffix) as ancient Greek χείρ hand: see cheiro- comb. form) + -in, suffix forming adjectives.Compare the following earlier uses of Indian-language words in English contexts (although it is not entirely clear precisely which languages are intended; with quot. 1831 perhaps compare Marathi hattī):1821 D. Mackworth Jrnl. 5 Sept. in Diary Tour S. India, Egypt, & Palestine (1823) ii. 164 My palankeen was suddenly and hastily set down by the bearers belonging to the Mysoor Rajah, who cried out,..‘hathee, hathee,’ and then all took to their heels.1831 D.
