hatelyadv.

Forms:

α. Old English–early Middle English hetelice, Old English hetlice (rare), late Old English–early Middle English hætelice, early Middle English hætliche, Middle English heteli, Middle English heteliche, Middle English hetelike, Middle English hetilich, Middle English hetli, Middle English hetlik.

β. Middle English hately.

Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Middle Low German hātlīken , hētlīken with animosity, Old High German -hazlīhho (only in the compound liuthazlīhho tyrannically; Middle High German hazlīche fiercely, violently, with animosity, German hässlich , also in sense ‘unpleasantly, in an ugly way’), Old Icelandic hatrliga with animosity < the Germanic base of hete n.1 + the Germanic base of -ly suffix2. The β. forms show alteration after hate n. Compare Middle Dutch hātelīke with animosity (Dutch †hatelijk , also fiercely, violently), showing a new formation < Middle Dutch hāte hate n. + -līke -ly suffix2. Compare hately adj. It has been suggested that the forms hetli and hetlik, which occur in the Vespasian manuscript of Cursor Mundi, apparently in sense ‘scornfully’, could alternatively show forms of hethely adv. (compare the variant readings in quot. a1400).
Obsolete.
(a) Fiercely; violently, viciously. (b) Scornfully; with animosity.
