Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from French, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Anoura , -an suffix; French Anoures , -an suffix.
Etymology: < (i) scientific Latin Anoura, order name (J. E. Gray 1825 in Ann. Philos. 10 213; later generally adopted in the form Anura (J. Hogg 1839, in Mag. Nat. Hist. 3 270)), or its etymon (ii) French Anoures, family name ( A. M. C. Duméril Zool. analyt. (1806) 93; < an- an- prefix2 + ancient Greek οὐρά tail: see uro- comb. form2) + -an suffix. Compare earlier anourous adj.Duméril's name Anoures was earlier Latinized as Anuri ( G. Fischer von Waldheim Zoognosia (1813) I. 58) and Anuria ( C. S. Rafinesque Analyse de nat. (1815) 78).
