单词 anuak
释义

Anuakn.adj.

Brit. /ˈan(j)ʊak/, U.S. /ˈæn(j)ʊˌæk/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, Anuaks.
Forms:

α. 1800s– Niuak (now rare and historical), 1900s– Nyuak.

β. 1900s– Anuak, 1900s– Anwak, 1900s– Anyuak, 1900s– Anywak.

γ. 1900s– Anywa.

Origin: A borrowing from Anuak. Etymon: Anuak àɲwáa.
Etymology: < Anuak àɲwáa, self-designation < a-, derivational prefix + ɲwak to share + -a, singular ending, which causes morphophonological deletion of the -k-. Compare German Niuak (1877 or earlier). With use with reference to the language compare Anuak dháàɲwáa, lit. ‘language of the Anuak’.It is unclear why the -k of the base appears in European languages; it has been suggested that the name was not borrowed directly < Anuak, but from a related neighbouring language such as Shilluk. The α. forms may reflect aphesis within a European language (probably German). The γ. forms most closely reflect the Anuak form.
