Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: hardy adj., -ness suffix.
Etymology: < hardy adj. + -ness suffix. With sense 1 compare earlier hardiesse n. In sense 2 partly after hardness n., and partly reflecting a scribal or compositorial error for that word.
1. The quality or fact of being bold or courageous; presumption; resoluteness. Now archaic and rare.
