Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin antrorsus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin antrorsus in front, forwards (a1606; compare earlier antrorsum in front, forwards (4th or 5th cent. in Jerome)) < classical Latin *antero- (see antero- comb. form) + versus verse adj., after extrorsus extrorse adj., retrōrsus retrorse adj., etc. Compare French antrorse (1802 or earlier, originally in botanical use). Compare earlier retrorse adj.
Botany and Zoology.
Turned or pointing forwards, upwards, or towards an axis. Contrasted with retrorse.
