Etymology: < head n.1 + place n.1 With sense 1a compare post-classical Latin capitale (from 12th cent. in British sources in this sense), use as noun of neuter of capitalis capital adj., and also Anglo-Norman chef mees principal messuage (1292 or earlier; compare mese n.2). Compare later capital messuage n. at capital adj. and n.2 Compounds 1b. With sense 2 compare Dutch hoofdstuk main point of an argument (1599 in Kiliaan), chapter of a book (17th cent.), Middle Low German hȫvetstücke , with the same senses (both words are lit. ‘head piece’); and compare also classical Latin capitulum in its post-classical Latin senses ‘main point of an argument’, ‘chapter of a book’ (see capitulum n.).
