A covering for the head made of linen. Cf. head linen n. at head n.1 Compounds 4.Recorded earliest in bishop head-line.In quot. OE apparently ultimately reflecting Isidore Origines 19. 30. 4, which describes the headband worn by Roman priests (classical Latin infula: see infula n. 1), but perhaps in this gloss denoting a bishop's mitre or its lappets (mitres in their early form were apparently usually of white linen).The context in quot. a1200 is not entirely clear; it is possible the word denotes a priest's amice.
