Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French anteci; Latin antoeci.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French anteci (1558 in the passage translated in quot. 1568), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin antoeci (plural) those who live between the same meridian lines, but on the opposite side of the equator (5th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek ἄντοικοι , plural < ancient Greek ἀντι- anti- prefix + οἶκος house (see oecist n.). Compare earlier antipodes n.
Now historical and rare.
With plural agreement. People who live at the same meridian as others or oneself, on the opposite side of the equator and at the same distance from it; = Antiscii n. Cf. antipodes n. 1a, perioecus n. 1.
