(i) With reference to falling, tumbling, etc.: so that one's heels are in the air and one's head is below them; so as turn completely over, as in a somersault; headlong.Apparently arising from an inversion of the elements in earlier heels over head at heel n.1 and int. Phrases 3a. Cf. top over tail at top n.1 and adj. Phrases 3b.
