Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu ḥawelī; Persian ḥawelī.
Etymology: < (i) Urdu ḥawelī lands in the vicinity of a town, government lands, mansion, house, and its etymon (ii) Persian ḥawelī lands in the vicinity of a town, government lands, (in Indian Persian also) mansion, house < ḥawālī environs, surroundings, suburbs < colloquial Arabic ḥawāli, variant of ḥawālā around.
South Asian.
1. Chiefly with reference to south-west India, esp. under the rule of the British East India Company: land owned and directly administered by the governing authorities, esp. as opposed to that administered by a zamindar (zamindar n.). Originally and frequently attributive, esp. in haveli lands. Also as a count noun. Now historical.Often opposed to zamindari (zamindari n. 1).
