Etymology: < hard adj. + soap n.1, originally after post-classical Latin sapo durus (1363 in Chauliac; 14th cent. in a British glossarial source).
Soap that is hard or solid and does not readily dissolve, usually made from the sodium salts of fatty acids.Soft soap is usually made from the potassium salts of fatty acids; see soft soap n. 1.
