Hasmoneann.adj. Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Asamonaeus , Asmonaeus , -an suffix. Etymology: < post-classical Latin Asamonaeus (4th cent. in a translation of Josephus; also Asmonaeus, Assamonaeus, Asmoneus, Hasamonaeus; < Hellenistic Greek Ἀσσαμωναῖος (Josephus): see note) + -an suffix.Compare post-biblical Hebrew Ḥašmōnay , Middle French, French Asmonéen (1561 or earlier), and also German Hasmonäer (late 17th cent. or earlier; 1531 or earlier as Asamoneer , 1570 or earlier as Asmoneer ). Further etymology of the name. Josephus derives the name of the dynasty from the reputed great-grandfather of Mattathias (d. 164 b.c.), Ἀσσαμωναῖος . Post-biblical Hebrew Ḥašmōnay occurs as a title of the Maccabees in the Mishnah (Middot 1:6) and the Talmud (Shabbat 21b), although not in the books of Maccabees themselves. The origin of the dynasty name is uncertain, but it is probably related to the name of Heshmon , a village in southern Judaea mentioned in Joshua 15:27. Earlier synonym.
