单词 haskwort
释义

haskwortn.

Forms: 1500s haskewoort, 1500s haskewurt, 1500s haskewurte, 1600s haskwort, 1600s–1700s haskewort, 1800s–1900s haskwort.
Origin: Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Perhaps formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: halswort n., hask adj., wort n.1
Etymology: Apparently either (i) an alteration of halswort n. (although this is apparently not attested after the mid 15th cent.), after hask adj. (perhaps on account of its use in treating throat infections which cause hoarseness), or (ii) directly < hask adj. + wort n.1Compare later English regional (northern and north midlands) hask dry cough, especially in cattle (1757; either < hask adj. or a variant of husk n.2), English regional (Northumberland) and Scots hask throat, soft palate (19th cent.; perhaps an irregular variant of halse n.1: compare forms such as hasse at that entry), and also Older Scots hask , apparently denoting the neck-hole of a pillory (1674 in an isolated attestation, and apparently also showing a variant of halse n.1). With the possible connection with halswort n. compare Dutch halscruit (1554 in Dodoens, the work translated in quot. 1578) and the similarly-formed German Halskraut (1542; < Hals neck (see halse n.1) + Kraut herb: see Kraut n.).
Obsolete.
Any of several bellflowers, genus Campanula, used medicinally in the treatment of diseases of the throat, esp. the nettle-leaved bellflower, C. trachelium, and the giant bellflower, C. latifolia. Cf. throatwort n. 1.
