Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew haśkālāh.

Etymology: < post-biblical Hebrew haśkālāh enlightenment (early 19th cent. or earlier), specific sense development of haśkālāh wisdom, instruction, learning (5th cent.) < hiśkīl to understand (see Maskil n.). Compare Yiddish haskale , haskole (probably early 19th cent.) < post-biblical Hebrew haśkālāh . Compare slightly earlier Maskil n., which derives from the same Hebrew root.

A movement among central and eastern European Jews during the late 18th and 19th centuries, having as its object the modernization of Jews and Judaism through both an increased knowledge of secular arts and sciences and assimilation with the general population.Also known as the Jewish Enlightenment (Jewish Enlightenment n. at Jewish adj. Compounds).
