Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Probably partly a borrowing from Arabic. Etymons: Dutch assis; Latin lhasis; Arabic ḥašīš.
Etymology: Originally (in α. forms) < Dutch †assis (1596, in the passage translated in quot. 1598; subsequently from the 19th cent. as haschisch , (now usually) hasjiesj ) < post-classical Latin assis (1591) < Arabic ḥašīš (see below). In later use (in β. forms) < post-classical Latin lhasis (1556 in the passage translated in quot. 1600; < Arabic al-ḥašīš < al the + ḥašīš ). Subsequently (in γ. forms) probably directly < Arabic ḥašīš Indian hemp, a narcotic prepared from this (10th cent. or earlier), specific uses of ḥašīš herbage (especially used as fodder), hay.The Arabic word was also borrowed into other European languages. Compare: Italian †lhasis (1550 in G. B. Ramusio's translation of Leo Africanus; the usual modern Italian form is hascisc : mid-19th cent. as hatcich ); Middle French hasis (1556 in a translation of Leo Africanus), French haschisch (late 18th cent.; originally after German; also hachich , hachisch (both early 19th cent.)); German Haschisch (1772 in the passage translated in quot. 1792; rare before the 1840s). Specific forms. In form haschisch at γ. forms originally after German Haschisch.
Cannabis resin, used esp. as a recreational drug. Also (less commonly): a dried preparation of the flowering tops or other parts of the cannabis plant used in this way. Cf. hash n.2
