Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Hashimoto.
Etymology: < the name of Hakaru Hashimoto (1881–1934), Japanese surgeon, who described the condition in 1912 ( Arch. f. klin. Chirurg. 97 219).Compare Japanese Hashimoto-byō, lit. ‘Hashimoto disease’ (1959 or earlier) and Hashimoto-shi-byō (1951 or earlier, with honorific suffix), both probably after English.
Medicine.
In the genitive and attributive. Designating an autoimmune disorder of the thyroid occurring especially in women, characterized by diffuse enlargement of the gland, destruction of glandular tissue, and the development of hypothyroidism. Esp. in Hashimoto's disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
