Origin: A borrowing from Swahili. Etymon: Swahili harambee.
Etymology: < Swahili harambee, interjection encouraging collaboration, alteration (under the influence of Kikuyu phonology: see note) of halambe, interjection used to accompany hard communal labour, of unknown origin.The expression was used as a slogan by J. Kenyatta, prime minister of Kenya 1963–4 (and subsequently the country's first president) and appears as a motto in the country's coat of arms; compare quot. 1963. It is unclear whether it was introduced or popularized by him. Kenyatta was a Kikuyu speaker. Compare the following, citing the Swahili heraldic motto in an English context:1963 Times 27 July 7/4 Heraldic golden lions are bearers for the shield and stand on a brown scroll with the slogan ‘Harambee’—Mr Kenyatta's call to the nation to strive together for betterment.

1. The action or fact of working together; a spirit of civic unity or cooperation among Kenyans. Originally as a slogan and rallying cry used by Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya's first president (1964–78), which was adopted as the country's official motto. Also: a development policy of self-help promoted by Kenyatta's government, in which local communities are encouraged to raise their own funds to build infrastructure such as schools, clinics, etc. Frequently as a modifier, esp. in harambee school.
