1899 tr. P. Ehrlich in Trans. Jenner Inst. Prevent. Med. 2nd Ser. 11 I have already..touched upon the question whether..the toxin molecule contains two independent groups, of which the one (the toxophore) conditions the toxicity, and the other (the haptophore) the combining property.
1904 Brit. Med. Jrnl. 10 Sept. 574 Although the toxophoric group may be similar, the haptophor is dissimilar.
1960 New Biol. 31 104 It was very hard to conceive that ‘haptophores’ could pre-exist.
2009 A. E. Frankel et al. in R. K. Oldham & R. O. Dillman Princ. Cancer Biotherapy (ed. 5) xi. 426/2 The molecules are homogeneous with a single site of linkage between the haptophore and toxophore.

1899 tr. P. Ehrlich in Trans. Jenner Inst. Prevent. Med. 2nd Ser. 12 With the help of the haptophore groups, the toxin molecule becomes ‘anchored’ to the cell.
1910 Lancet 18 June 1670/1 When a toxin is brought into contact with its antitoxin no visible change is produced, but the combination is non-virulent, owing to the occupation of the haptophore group of the toxin, according to Ehrlich's hypothesis.
1955 H. Moriyama Immunity ii. i. 112 Heat and other agencies destroyed the agglutinophore and left the haptophore groups relatively unaltered.
2004 J. M. Cruse & R. E. Lewis Atlas Immunol. vii. 205/2 Ehrlich proposed a haptophore group that reacted with a corresponding group of an antigen.
