Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French haptoglobine.
Etymology: < French haptoglobine (M. Polonovski & M. F. Jayle 1940, in Comptes Rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 211 518) < ancient Greek ἅπτειν to fasten (see haptic adj.) + French globine globin n.
Biochemistry.
Any of a group of proteins of the alpha globulin class that are present in the blood and are capable of binding and forming stable complexes with free haemoglobin; this group of proteins.
