Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin haptice.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin haptice (1685 in the passage translated in quot. 1734 at sense 1) < ancient Greek ἁπτικός haptic adj. + post-classical Latin -e , suffix forming feminine nouns: see -ic suffix 2. In later use after German Haptik (M. Dessoir 1892, in Archiv f. Anat. u. Physiol. 242). Compare haptic adj.
1. Chiefly Psychology and Linguistics. Tactile and kinaesthetic sensation; touch, esp. as a means of nonverbal communication; the study of this.
