Etymology: < Japanese happi worker's or artisan's livery coat (1603 as fappi actor's costume, in Vocabulario da lingoa de Iapam) < hafuhi (later also hōhi) garment worn by Buddhist clergy ( < hafu, hap- (now hō) law, rule, dharma + -hi garment (both < Middle Chinese)), apparently merged with (unrelated) hanpi, hanbi short-sleeved jacket, formerly a kind of garment for formal wear (780; < han half + -bi, -pi, combining forms of -hi elbow, upper arm; both < Middle Chinese).
