Compare earlier aikido n.Hapkido was developed by the Korean-born Yong-Sul Choi (1904–86), who spent several decades in Japan (1912–45) and was taught Daito-ryu jujitsu (also called aiki-jujutsu) by the same teacher as Morihei Uyeshiba, the founder of aikido (see discussion at aikido n.). After his return to Korea, Choi taught his art under various names from 1948; the first use of the name hapkido (in 1958 or 1959) is often attributed to his student, Han-Jae Ji.
