Brit. /ˈhaŋkə/, U.S. /ˈhæŋkər/
Etymology: Not known before 1600; history obscure. Modern Dutch has hunkeren (Plantijn, 1673, hungkeren ), dialect hankeren , in same sense. Generally thought to be frequentative and intensive derivative of hang v., but compare hank v. 6.
1. intransitive. To ‘hang about’, to linger or loiter about with longing or expectation. Now dialect.
