Etymology: Late Old English or early Middle English hærnes, Middle English hernes; apparently < Norse: compare Old Norse hjarne, -ni weak masculine ( < *hernon-, *herznon-) brain (Swedish hierna (feminine), Danish hierne); also Old High German hirni (Middle High German herne, German hirn) neuter, Middle Low German herne, harne, Middle Dutch herne feminine and neuter, hersene, harsene (feminine) (Dutch, in plural only, hersenen, hersens, har-), all going back to an original neuter *hirzni, *hirsni, which subsequently passed into feminine in Middle Dutch The Old Germanic *herzn-, *hersn-, was from the same root as Sanskrit çîrshn- head, and Greek κρανίον skull, perhaps also Latin cere-brum brain.
