单词 handworm
释义

handwormn.

Brit. /ˈhandwəːm/, U.S. /ˈhæn(d)ˌwərm/
Forms: see hand n. and worm n.; also Old English hondwyrmmum (dative plural, transmission error).
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: hand n., worm n.
Etymology: < hand n. + worm n. (compare worm n. 7a), so named because the hands are especially vulnerable to the parasite.Compare also early Old English handuyrp , honduyrp , rendering post-classical Latin briensis (see note at definition) in glosses related to quot. eOE1. It is uncertain whether these are scribal errors for handwyrm handworm n., or whether they are to be interpreted as a synonymous formation < hand n. + a reflex of the Germanic base of warp v. (compare the second element of Germanic formations denoting the mole: see mouldwarp n., want n.1).
Now historical.
The itch mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, which causes scabies and often burrows in the skin of the hands. Also in figurative contexts, as the type of something minute. In quot. eOE1 rendering post-classical Latin briensis, a word of uncertain meaning, attested only in glossaries, probably denoting a parasite causing skin disease. It is not certain that all uses in Old English refer to the same organism.
