Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a Dutch lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a Middle Low German lexical item. Etymons: hand n., spike n.2
Etymology: < hand n. + spike n.2, after either handspoke n., its etymon early modern Dutch handspaecke, or Middle Low German hantspēke crowbar, lever (see handspeek n.). Compare earlier handspoke n. and later handspeek n.In sense 2 after handspoke n. 2.
Now chiefly historical.
1. Chiefly Nautical and Gunnery. A crowbar or lever, typically made of wood and tipped with iron; esp. such a tool used on board a ship or in manoeuvring heavy artillery.
