单词 halkrig
释义

halkrign.

Brit. /ˈhalkrᵻɡ/, U.S. /ˈhælkrᵻɡ/
Forms:

α. pre-1700 halcreike, pre-1700 halcrek, pre-1700 halcrik, pre-1700 halkirk, pre-1700 halkrek, pre-1700 halkrik, pre-1700 halkryng, pre-1700 1900s– halkrig, 1800s halkrick, 1800s halkrike.

β. pre-1700 1800s halecret, 1800s hallecret, 1800s hallecret, 1800s–1900s allecret.

Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Perhaps partly also a borrowing from Middle Low German. Etymons: Middle Low German halskrāge; French halecret.
Etymology: In α. forms apparently either (i) < Middle Low German halskrāge a piece of clothing covering the neck ( < hals halse n.1 + krāge (see crag n.2); compare early modern German halskragen a piece of armour for the neck (15th cent.), and compare crag n.2), or (ii) < Middle French hallecret (see below), apparently with alteration of the ending after -ock suffix (compare forms at emmet n., limpet n., whitret n.). In β. forms (iii) < Middle French hallecret, allecret, French (now hist.) halecret light armour made of articulated plates (1488), itself of uncertain origin: probably < Middle Dutch halscleet a piece of clothing covering the neck and the upper body (apparently not attested in the armour sense; < hals halse n.1 + cleet cloth n.), with dissimilation of the second l to r (perhaps influenced by the forms in German and Middle Low German), or perhaps alternatively < early modern German halskragen (see above), with an alteration after -et -et suffix1. Compare gorger n.1, gorgeret n.1, gorget n.1, and also collar n. 2, gullet n. 2a. N.E.D. (1898) gives the headword as Halecret, Hallecret and the pronunciation as (hæ·lkrėt) /ˈhælkrɪt/.
Armour. Originally Scottish. Now rare (historical after 16th cent.).
Any of a number of types of light plate armour of the 16th cent.; spec. a corselet consisting of a breastplate and a backplate, ornamented with long tassels.
