Etymology: < hand n. + -ed suffix2. In later use in sense 2 partly after post-classical Latin palmatus palmate adj.With sense 1a compare Old English -hende (in e.g. ān-hende one-handed, īdel-hende idle-handed, spær-hende sparing, strang-hende strong-handed, etc.), ultimately representing an adjectival derivative of the Germanic base of hand n. with suffix causing i-mutation (see hend adj. and n.).
