(U.S.) designating an emigrant, esp. a Mormon, who crosses the prairies with his or her goods on a handcart (now historical); of or relating to handcarts.The handcart pioneers consisted chiefly of members of the Church of Latter-day Saints who had arrived in the United States from the British Isles and Scandinavia with the intention of settling in Salt Lake City, Utah. After travelling by rail from the east coast to Iowa, where the railway ended, many settlers transported their goods by handcart the rest of the way, lacking the necessary funds to hire horses or oxen. The handcart emigration, which cost the lives of over 200 people in freezing winter temperatures, took place between 1856 and 1860.
