Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi haldū.
Etymology: < Hindi haldū (also hardū ) kind of Himalayan tree, ultimately < Sanskrit haridru kind of yellow tree ( < hari yellow (see yellow adj.) + dru wood: see tree n.), probably via a related language of the Himalayas (compare Garhwali haḷdu).Garhwali is a Pahari language spoken primarily in Uttarakhand, India.
A large deciduous tree with heart-shaped leaves, native to South and South-East Asia, Adina cordifolia (or Haldina cordifolia) (family Rubiaceae). Also: the pale yellowish hardwood timber of this tree, used esp. for furniture. The roots and bark of this tree have a number of applications as herbal remedies in Ayurvedic medicine.
