Etymology: < scientific Latin Hakea (H. A. Schrader & J. C. Wendland, 1797 ( Sertum Hannoveranum I. iii. 27); 1799 as Hackea) < the name of Christian Ludewig von Hake (1745–1818), minister of the Electorate of Hanover + scientific Latin -a -a suffix¹.

Any member of the genus Hakea (family Proteaceae), comprising trees and shrubs native to Australia, many of which have needle-like or spiny leaves and pincushion-like compound inflorescences with projecting stigmas; a needlebush or needlewood. Also (in form Hakea): the genus itself.
