Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic ḥakawātī.
Etymology: < Levantine Arabic ḥakawātī popular storyteller, irregularly < a spoken Arabic plural form (compare the standard plural form ḥikāyāt ) of ḥikāya story, tale, narrative ( < ḥakā to tell, relate) + , suffix forming agent nouns (see -i suffix2).
Now chiefly historical.
In some Arabic-speaking regions of the Middle East: a person who recites traditional stories as a profession, esp. in cafes and other public places.
