单词 haire
释义

hairen.

Forms: α. Old English hǽre, hére, Middle English hære, Middle English here, Middle English–1500s heare, Middle English–1500s heer(e. β. Middle English haiȝre, Middle English–1600s haire (Middle English heiȝre, Middle English heyre, Middle English–1500s hayr(e, heire, Middle English hayr, heyeer, Middle English–1500s hayer, 1500s heyer). γ. Middle English hare.
Etymology: Of this word there were two Middle English types, both however going back to West Germanic *hârjâ derivative of hăr hair: the first directly through Old English, West Saxon hǽre , Anglian hére weak feminine, which regularly became in Middle English hêre , heare , heere , and, with mutescence of final e , heer ; the second, Middle English haire , through Old French haire , medieval Latin haira < Old Frankish *hârja (Old High German hârra ); the form < French survived longest, but is now obsolete or merged in hair n. (sense 7). The Middle English variant hare evidently arose from assimilation to the corresponding Norse form of hair.
Obsolete.
Cloth made of hair, haircloth; esp. a hair shirt worn next the skin by ascetics and penitents; extended later to any kind of coarse or harsh fabric, as sackcloth or the like.
