Etymology: < half adv. + lang, Scots form of long adj.1 (compare α. forms at long adj.1 and n.1). Originally (in general use in sense A. 1) a Scots variant of half long (a1425 in Middle English; compare half adv. 1a), subsequently distinguished in specific uses. In some forms and senses difficult to distinguish from halfling n. and adj. (see discussion at that entry). With sense B. 2 compare halfling n. 1.The β. forms represent anglicized spellings in Older Scots; compare β. forms at long adj.1 and n.1
