Brit. /ˈɑːm(ə)ri/, U.S. /ˈɑrm(ə)ri/
Forms: late Middle English armoirie, late Middle English armoyrye, late Middle English–1600s armorye, 1500s armery, 1500s–1600s armorie, 1500s– armory, 1500s– armoury (now nonstandard); also Scottish pre-1700 armoury. N.E.D. (1885) also records a form late Middle English armorie.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French armoirie.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French armoierie, Middle French armoirie, armoyrie, armoyerie, armerie (French armoiries , plural noun) armorial bearings, heraldic arms (a1304 in Old French as armoierie ), insignia of war (a1373 in Froissart), heraldry (early 15th cent.) < armoyer , armoyeur maker or seller of weapons, also blazoner, herald (end of the 13th cent.; it is sometimes difficult to tell which sense is intended; < armoier , armoyer to bear arms, to fight (late 12th cent.), to emblazon, to decorate with armorial bearings (although this is first attested slightly later in this sense: a1340; < arme weapon: see arms n.)) + -erie -ery suffix.
