单词 hamite
释义

Hamiten.1adj.

Brit. /ˈhamʌɪt/, U.S. /ˈhæˌmaɪt/
Forms: 1500s–1800s Chamite, 1800s Khamite, 1700s– Hamite.
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Ham , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < Ham (also Cham (now archaic); Hebrew Ḥām, Hellenistic Greek Χάμ, post-classical Latin Cham, Ham), the name of the second son of Noah (Genesis 6:10) + -ite suffix1.Compare post-classical Latin Chamitae, plural (1531 or earlier). According to the Bible, Ham saw his father Noah drunk and naked (Genesis 9:22–25), and Noah cursed Ham's son Canaan on account of this. Ham was regarded as the progenitor of various peoples (listed in Genesis 10:6–20) which inhabited north-east Africa, parts of the Middle East, and the Arabian peninsula. Prominent peoples among them were the Egyptians and the Canaanites. The name of Ham is attested in English contexts in biblical translations and references from the Old English period onwards (in Old English and Middle English in the forms Cham, Cam).
