Etymology: Probably a variant of hackboat n.1, with voicing of the final consonant of the first element (perhaps with some degree of folk-etymological association with hag n.1). The β. forms probably result from folk-etymological association with hog n.1 Compare later hag n.3
Now historical.
A type of large seagoing vessel with a square stern and a fuller body than a frigate, formerly used both as a warship and in the timber and coal trades. Cf. hackboat n.1 2.
