Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish armadillo.
Etymology: < Spanish armadillo (1574 in the passage translated in quot. 1577), lit. ‘small armed person’ < armado armed (c1200; use as adjective of past participle of armar arm v.1) + -illo , diminutive suffix (compare -illa suffix).Specific senses. In sense 2 after scientific Latin Armadillo, genus name ( P. A. Latreille Buffon's Hist. nat.: Crustacés et insectes (1802), after earlier use as species name (in Oniscus armadillo , Linnaeus 1758); also used by Cuvier (1792) as a genus name for a pill millipede (Glomeris)). Specific forms. The forms armadillio, armadilio reflect the Spanish pronunciation with palatalized l . With the forms armadil, armadile perhaps compare French armadille (1615; also †armadile; < Spanish). Historically the plural was often spelt armadilloes, but armadillos is now usual.

Any of the burrowing edentate mammals constituting the family Dasypodidae (order Cingulata) of South America and southern North America, which have the body encased by bony plates in the skin (osteoderms) covered by horny scutes, and are able to roll themselves into a ball when threatened.
