Originally and chiefly British.
A horse-drawn or motor-driven taxicab. In later use spec. a type of automotive taxi, originally and usually (but now not always) black, which may be hailed in the street and can accommodate up to five passengers in the rear, separated from the driver's seat by a partition. Cf. black cab n. at black adj. and n. Compounds 1e(a).This type of cab is also commonly known as a London taxi.
